LEGAZPI CITY – The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. V (MGB R.O.-V) recently attended sessions of the different Sannguniang Panlalawigans regionwide to present and discuss the proposed Landslide Early Warning System (LEWS) using rainfall thresholds for the inclusion in the Regional Development Investment Program (RDIP).
This is in connection with the recommendation of the Economic Development Committee for proponent regional agencies to submit SP Resolution endorsing the project for inclusion in the RDIP.
This Php12.05M project is an innovation to enhance the existing MGB scheme of providing landslide warning to LGUs. It aims to provide accurate, easy-to-interpret, timely, and regularly updated landslide warning information to enable Local Chief Executives and the Local Risk Reduction Management Offices to make decisions concerning landslide preparedness and safety measures and further contribute to the long-term goal of reducing landslide casualties. This landslide warning scheme was pilot tested through a capstone project in Albay Province during the Typhoon “Ulysses” in November 2021 where results were used in the calibration of rainfall thresholds for better performance.
