LEGAZPI CITY – The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. V (MGB R.O.-V) under the stewardship of RD Guillermo A. Molina, Jr. IV has conducted a site inventory of Sand and Gravel quarry sites in the Provinces of Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes and Sorsogon.
The purpose of the activity is to determine the width and extent of the sand and gravel quarry sites in the said provinces and to inquire their compliance with R.A. 7942 or the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 since the Region is known for its large deposits of these aggregates as the main source of materials are from volcanoes and riverbanks.
The said activity was undertaken by every MGB technical personnel deployed to PENRO and CENRO station of the above-mentioned provinces to conduct assessments and data gathering within their respective area of jurisdiction.
During the conduct of the inventory, the following are the initial findings of the concerned MGB technical personnel: in the Province of Albay, it showed a total of 86 quarry/sand and gravel sites and 21 crushing plants inspected; while in the Province of Camarines Sur, there are 19 quarry sites assessed; for the Province of Camarines Norte, there are 14 quarry sites and 6 crushing plants identified; in the Province of Catanduanes, there are 33 sand and gravel sites assessed, and in the Province of Sorsogon, the Office identified 14 sand and gravel, 11 mountain quarry and 13 quarry sites confirmed existing by the Province of Sorsogon.
The recommendations made by the same MGB technical personnel are as follows:
- Quarry/sand and gravel permittees should always abide by the rules and regulations of quarry operations in conducting quarry activities in their respective areas; and
- The Provincial Government concerned and the agencies concerned should always conduct monitoring of quarry sites to ascertain that no permittee shall violate any rules and regulations and the terms and conditions provided for in their Environmental Compliance Certificate.
This action of MGB R.O.-V is in pursuance of the mandate of the MGB as steward of the country’s mineral resources in the exploration, disposition and utilization towards the promotion of sustainable mining resources development through responsible mining.
