LEGAZPI CITY – After a week-long field assessment on quarry operations of sand and gravel located on the slopes of Mayon Volcano, RD Guillermo A. Molina, Jr. IV of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region No. V (MGB R.O.-V) has ordered the suspension of permits of 14 errant permit holders in the Province of Albay.
In a letter dated November 20, 2020 addressed to Hon. Al Francis C. Bichara, RD Molina based his actions upon the recommendation of the inter-agency task force that assessed sand and gravel quarrying operations around Mayon Volcano. It was found out that some of the permit holders violated the Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) issued. These permit holders have been extracting sand and gravel outside the permit area, or have established work outside of the permit area of such nature, not covered by the permit or the ECC, such as stockyards, big and deep catchment, or abandoned pits.
Further, RD Molina stressed that the permits of errant holders with violations of their ECC shall be forwarded to EMB Region V for technical review and possible sanction or payment of penalty, as may be necessary. He added further that immediate rehabilitation of the areas outside of the permit areas shall be implemented in coordination with EMB Region V.
Meanwhile, permit holder who have not violated the terms and conditions of their permits are allowed to continue their operation subject to strict monitoring on the compliance with the terms and conditions of the permit.
