Mines and Geosciences Bureau Director Atty. Wilfredo G. Monacano started the site investigation on quarrying activities in sand and gravel sites and the lahar deposit on the slopes of Mayon Volcano. This is in response to Secretary Roy A. Cimatu’s instruction to conduct an in-depth investigation on the lahar incident that happened on November 1, 2020 in Barangay San Francisco and Travesia, Guinobatan, Albay.

In a recently held orientation cum planning program last November 5, 2020, Director Moncano briefed the members of the team the importance of the site investigation. He stressed that the team must focus on the following objectives: 1. to determine the compliance of the permit holders as regards the safety, area of extraction, production, taxes and the ECC conditions; 2. To determine the extent of lahar deposition; 3. To identify communities at risk to lahar; and 4. To determine the extent of the relationship of quarrying activities of sand and gravel around Mayon volcano to the lahar flow brought about by Sty Rolly.
